Running for a City Council position in the 2024 General Election

Are you interested in joining the City Council and serving the community? 

 

At the 2024 General Election, the positions of Mayor and three Councilors will appear on the ballot. The filing period for interested candidates is currently open. A person may File by Fee or File by Petition with the City of Toledo Elections Officer. Please Note: The filing by petition process, including signature verification, must be completed and delivered to the City Elections Officer by 5:00 p.m., Thursday, August 15, 2024. This deadline will provide the City Elections Officer enough time to submit the signature sheets to the County Clerk for signature verification.

The City of Toledo follows the state guidelines for Elections. The County, City and District Candidates Manual and SEL Filing Forms are available on the Oregon Secretary of State website. All Election manuals and forms are produced by the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division and can be found on their website at www.sos.state.or.us.



City Council positions:                                                                

  • Are non-partisan
  • Are elected At-Large, which means candidates may reside in any area of the community within the Toledo City limits
  • Are non-paid/volunteer positions

Qualifications and Residency Requirements

To qualify as a candidate for Mayor or a City Councilor, you must:

  • Be a qualified elector under the laws and constitution of the State of Oregon;
  • Be a registered voter of the City of Toledo;
  • Reside in all areas included in the incorporated limits as of the date of election; and

Resided within the City during the 12 months preceding the election they are filing for.


HOW TO FILE

A person may File by Fee or File by Petition with the City of Toledo [Toledo Municipal Code; Chapter 1.12 – Elections].

To File by Fee:

To file by fee, a person must file SEL Form 101 Candidate Filing – Major Political Party or Nonpartisan [copy enclosed], the Declaration of Candidacy Certification located on page 5, and pay the required $20 filing fee with the City Elections Officer.

Complete the two forms listed below and submit them to the City Elections Officer for approval prior to gathering any signatures and well in advance of the August 15, 2024 deadline. No filing fees are required to run for the City of Toledo offices by this method.
